Simple pleasures of life

"Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad"

This song reminds me of those simple things which we often tend to forget amidst our fast-paced lifestyle. We all run different races every day, every hour in our lives. Personal, professional, social races. Each with a different target, different pace, different style and strategy. Our minds are so pre-occupied with their ideas that we fail to take note of the small yet precious things around us. This song impressed me so much that it prompted me to remember all those simple things that I derive pleasure from and I started writing them down.

Walking bare foot on green grass gently covered with dew;
Sipping morning tea with newspaper in garden every morning;
Long evening walks and discussions with my soul-mate in winters;
Enjoying the sweet smell of "Night Queen" outside bedroom window.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee;
Watching the moving clouds and imagining pictures;
Plucking jasmines every evening;
Making garlands of flowers.

To see my mom clad in a beautiful white cotton sari and hug her tight;
Rest my head in her lap and forget everything;
Listen to her talk, lullabies and poems;
Lie on my stomach like a baby and fall asleep.

Singing together with my daughter, and singing with her on tabla/guitar.
Covering her new books with brown papers and labels, and smelling them;
Yoga and dancing with my daughter;
Making sandwiches for her.

Watching "Padamati Sandhyaragam" and "HumTum";
Television soaps like "Bade Acche Lagte Hain";
Teletubbies and In the night garden;
Watching all of them with my family and discussing amidst comments and laughter.

Random painting and embroidery;
Penning my thoughts and observations;
Playing snakes n ladders;
Ans also carroms and magic vines;

Cooking simple vegetables;
Growing vegetable garden;
Having roses and poises in my garden.
Growing herbs in pots on kitchen window sill;

Stitching lacy white curtains for the bedroom windows;
And checkered curtains for kitchen and dining.
Browsing through lifestyle and interiors magazines over and over;
Musing and believing "Shopping is therapeutic".

Enjoying a good read with fritters and hot tea, and watching it rain from a window;
Chatting with friends and exchanging recipes;
Laughing together endlessly for "no obvious reason" while talking with friends;
Win a game of badminton.

These are a few of my favorite things...........................but,

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad

I simply have to learn to remember my favorite things
And then I won't feel so bad!!

What went wrong?

It has been a few months that I bought this book - Essentialism by Greg McKeown . I found the book very realistic and baring the naked truth of my life in my face. But could not get even half way through it... as usual, got distracted with the non-essentials in my, after all, plain Jane life. I hate to say this but my life is mundanely simple. There are no excitements, no yahoo moments, not much of travel, no great social connect either. But I do have a bunch of good friends. Interestingly, I have picked up good friends in all walks of my life. I am neither a chatty kind nor a monk. And, am happy for the fact that my friends do not hate me. I do not offer opinions and advises, unless specifically asked for. Nor do I criticize anybody 'coz I do not know what the other person is/was caught up in. In a nutshell, I do not waste my energy on this stuff. And, I am meticulous in whatever work I am given to do. These are a few things that I am proud of. Well, coming back to the book in re...

Kshema's 7 Quick Takes Friday (Volume 05/2015)

And then Lord said, "Let there be week days"! --- 1 --- Manic Monday Hello Monday! Starting day of the week is usually the one filled with frenzy. You are the day when the "To Do" list that's written in the first morning hours is long; and the Inbox gets flooded too. Chase and get chased; and it runs into the other days of the week when the chase weakens by Wednesday and tries to pause by Friday, only to start afresh the next Monday. Home takes backseat. --- 2 --- Turn Up Tuesday Hey there Tuesday! Work craziness continues with growing number of rush hours, calls, clicking and clacking of keyboard and mouse, multiple windows of word processors, spreadsheets, and browsers strewn open across multiple systems. Programmers feverishly scripting away their ideas to meet the expectations of their principals amidst balancing the poking requests of a network of users.... silently cursing themselves and their days for they cannot satisfy all. The...

Kshema's 7 Quick Takes Friday (Volume 02/2015)

--- 1 --- There's a disconnect between my mind and body. My mind wants to express and my hands do not cooperate. The week was not-so-good, though it was not particularly bad also. I haven't suffered any set backs, but still, something inside me dissatisfied....... with things, happenings, doers and circumstances; but surprisingly not with myself, which is not the case always. --- 2 --- Relevance While reading Mitch Albom's "The Time Keeper", towards the end of the novel, I found the flow of story very interesting that probed me to think of the relevance of the plethora of things we do in our lives. The novel is story about Father Time, an old wealthy man and a young girl, all of them unrelated to each other in time and space; each of their story runs parallely throughout. The old wealthy man who is terminal, strategizes to freeze his own body beyond time, so that he can turn alive in future when a sure shot cure is invented for his ailment. For this he ...
