Kshema's 7 Quick Takes Friday (Volume 9)

--- 1 ---

Yet another plain vanilla week. At work, it is calm before we move on to starting of a new academic session at our institute. Sort of gearing up for the next session. Once the academic registration marks the beginning of the new session, we will be lost in the hustle bustle of new students, new courses, services etc. At home, it is gearing up for a visit of some close ones. Cleaning, rearranging, organizing etc.

Summer projects - with love from school to mom!

This week, preceded by an eventful weekend, has also been the witness of the eventual culmination of the much awaited history project!! It all started in the vacations. The CBSE has announced project based learning for the history students of classes XI and the XII. For us i.e., my daughter and me, it was a welcome news. We loved her projects always and she has a record of scoring full in all her projects. Here, the choice between the given two project topics - "Town planning and Artifacts of Harappan Civilization" and "Mahabharata through a Reader's eye" was difficult. Both the topics seemed very interesting. I suggested, she take Mahabharata, as most students would opt for Harappan Civilization.

The vacations came to an end even before we could start working on her project. Incidentally our visit to Ahmedabad and to my senior colleague's library gave her the advantage of abundance of material for her history project. Though the matter she got from there was related to Harappan Civilization, it was unusual. Therefore, we changed our minds to work on this one instead of Mahabharata. We shall work on Mahabharata though she need not do it for her academics. It is an interesting topic which can generate several points of views, dimensions and facets.

Being a librarian I have always insisted upon following the best academic standards for my daughter's projects. This time we were very fortunate to receive guidance of another experienced librarian for her project. It meant and helped her a lot. We are sure, she'll score very good this time also.

All in all, helping her with the project was fun as it means a lot of searching, browsing, reading and checking the authenticity of facts. I love this job :)

The right mantra for right management of your moolah!

Sharing Warren Buffet's wisdom. The tips are all practical enough to be followed by most of us. I would like to add my little bit to it, that is, charity. Do indulge in charity, philanthropy, in your own little way. It is important to give back something to your community, to your fellow humans, to your society. Ofcourse the caution word is to check for deservance. I personally feel, our act of charity only adds to the feeling of satisfaction and self-reliance we will feel upon following the above tips. What's your take on this?

This week's recipe

"Carrot Raisin Oat Bran Muffins". You read it right. Fully loaded muffins with healthy stuff. Veg Inspirations posted this wonderful and interesting recipe. I am not a big bake freak, but love experimenting. Last winters were a great time for all our baking experiments. Muffins are the easiest ones to try. While I am writing about this, I am wondering if my daughter would surprise me even before I figure out a particularly suitable day and mood for my baking endeavor.

This week's book

"The Dalai Lama's Cat" by David Michie. The title amused me a lot. decided to delve deep, I checked various sites including David Michie's own site about the book, his blog, goodreads.com, and other reviews too. Read one sample chapter and now I have firmly decided to buy this book. Love the Zen principles. Simple, yet, profound ones.

Well, on a lighter note....... enjoy this doodle.

This week's song

"Ruk jaana nahin, tu kahin haar ke....." brilliantly motivational song by Kishore Kumar from Imtihan (1974), meaning 'test'. This movie was inspired from the British film "To Sir, with Love". It was originally authored by E.R. Braithwaite, which was a part of our English curriculum in high school. I loved the novel.

The message of the song is to never give up. One day we are sure to achieve our goals. But the path to reach them is not flowery, instead it may be full of thorns and difficulties. We may not have any company, yet, not to give up. Sounds like "Ekla chalo re" by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.

The resilient and agile librarian

He said he is leaving. I had no time to react. I was supposed to go online to start my lecture in the next few minutes. Before that I had to give finishing touches to my notes too. Already I was running late in preparing for the lecture. These days everything is at the eleventh hour. Having a work-life balance is a forgotten concept. No complaints whatsoever. Interestingly, the topic of my lecture for the day is about resilience and agility for librarians. What a stark contrast of situations! Sigh! I did not say a word. Silently I did my part of formalities. I sat at my desk and opened my slides and notes. Mechanically I ran through the slides. Words in my notes were dancing before my eyes. His words were ringing in my ears. It was getting difficult for me to concentrate. I closed my eyes tightly, took a deep breath, and reprimanded myself – “nobody is indispensable”; remember? This is what the Head of the Division said to my Reporting Officer when my contract got over in my very fir

The campus is already bright with freshman and the gleaming sophomores, juniors and seniors. The transformation in their feelings and attitudes as the freshman gradually climbs the ladder to a sophomore and so on, is interesting to observe. The freshman batch is mostly enthused and a bit more self disciplined in their dressing and demeanor. As they enter the next two levels, there is an air of reluctance. While in the graduating year there appears a mutual feeling of attachment between the

--- 1 --- This week has been a busy one. Looking forward to a busier week ahead :) The mercury has risen beyond 47C. Praying the rain Gods to shower mercy! --- 2 --- Our journey from denial to accomplishment. This picture defines my journey of blogging, I suppose :) Ever since I discovered the blogging activity, the different tools and techniques available to make the blog posts interesting, I have climbed each of these steps. Don't they appear to be relevant to most of our life activities where we encounter difficulty? Be it doing a project, undertaking a job, clearing an examination, specially when we are not willing to do something but are compelled to do........ or ........ sometimes even overcoming our fears! --- 3 --- Came across an interesting post on one of the food blogs ( Dr. Saila's ) I follow. The blogger, Dr. Saila, describes the benefits of using a "Stone Pot" for cooking. Here I borrowed the picture she posted. Stone
